Oaxaca es cuna de talentos. Son de sobra conocidos los casos de cocineras tradicionales, maestros mezcaleros o tejedores de textiles a lo largo y ancho del territorio. Es poco visible, pero el talento científico existe en cantidades mayores a las que podríamos suponer en una tierra conocida por su folclor más que por su ciencia.
Fernando nació en Zipolite, un lugar que es conocido por su atractivo turístico y su playa nudista famosa a nivel internacional. Pero esa población también tiene otra cara, la de los nativos que, o bien se dedican a los servicios turísticos o bien, buscan oportunidades más allá de su tierra natal.
La Universidad del Mar, UMAR, parte del Sistema de Universidades Estatales de Oaxaca, le ha dado la oportunidad de lograr sus sueños a una gran cantidad de jóvenes. Es el caso de Fernando, que cursó en sus aulas su carrera como biólogo marino, vocación que traía desde niño puesto que nació y creció frente al mar. Hijo de padres trabajadores. Ella como propietaria de una pizzería, él como profesor de educación secundaria. De ambos recibió el ejemplo de amor por el estudio y su propio carácter introvertido lo llevó a dedicar más horas a leer que el promedio de sus amigos, lo que le ayudó siempre a destacar y empezar a buscar la respuesta a la pregunta que desde niño se hacía: ¿Qué pasa en las profundidades del mar?
Desde la UMAR, Fernando, se orientó por la parasitología de las especies marinas, un tema que en apariencia no tiene importancia pero que es muy importante para la salud del ecosistema por el peso que tiene en el campo de la alimentación humana dado que del mar viene mucha de nuestra comida.
La maestría la cursó en la misma universidad enfocado en la ecología del mar en cuyo proyecto de investigación se dedicó a realizar estudios de sanguijuelas marinas, que se alimenta de la sangre de otros peces. Su trabajo consistió en buscar a esas especies para extraer muestras de sangre y, a través de ella, conocer mejor el estado de salud tanto de los peces como del medio en general.
Para cursar su doctorado buscó en diversas instituciones académicas. Encontró en las aulas de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, campus Ensenada, un grupo de académicos y científicos orientados en el campo que a él le interesa: la parasitología de las especies del mar. Haciendo un símil muy sencillo para comprender la importancia de su trabajo nos dice que, al igual que alguien va al laboratorio para extraerse sangre y conocer su estado de salud, con los peces vivos se hace lo mismo con la finalidad de saber que parásitos les han sido inoculados y como afecta su salud.
La consecuencia directa de este tipo de estudios de biología marina es la comprensión de cómo funcionan los sistemas inmunitarios en grupos no tan cercanos a nosotros y cuya información podría servir en el futuro, entre otras cosas, al desarrollo de nuevos fármacos o realizar las síntesis de nuevas moléculas para aplicaciones en la industria o la medicina. En la entrevista nos hace ver que la parasitología marina ha estado olvidada por muchos años sin tomar en cuenta que nuestro país, por la extensión de sus litorales, tiene un amplio campo de investigación disponible y una diversidad única en el mundo.
“Gran parte de los organismos que estudio tienen forma de gusano o “helminto”, y no es raro que posean ventosas para agarrarse firmemente de sus hospederos. Debido a su pequeño tamaño, el estudio de los helmintos requiere el uso de microscopios ópticos y de barrido, para estudiar a fondo su anatomía. En el océano hay múltiples niveles de asociaciones”.
“Uno de mis animales favoritos es la mantarraya gigante en su forma oscura. A las espaldas lleva una rémora, un pez con una aleta modificada como ventosa que, si bien no se considera un parásito estrictamente, se beneficia con un “aventón” a costa de la energía del pez más grande. Muchos de los parásitos que estudio existen de esta manera, sin afectar gravemente a sus hospederos. La mayoría de los parásitos encuentran su camino hacia sus hospederos a través de la comida, por lo que también es necesario entender de qué se están alimentando los hospederos y en qué zonas. Por ejemplo, los cardúmenes de rayas tecolote escarban en la arena de las playas para desenterrar crustáceos, los cuales seguramente les transmitirán larvas de helminto”. Es decir, al igual que las personas, los peces se infectan a través de lo que comen.
“Los hemoparásitos marinos son el tema central de mi trabajo de doctorado, donde buscaré identificar estos microorganismos en peces hospederos y sus potenciales vectores, secuenciar su ADN y explorar de qué manera responde el sistema inmune de animales marinos a la infección. Para ello, integraré conocimientos de genética, microscopía e ictiología en general que he adquirido durante mi carrera académica. Los resultados potencialmente tienen importantes implicaciones para la comprensión la mortalidad natural de los peces en vida silvestre, y conocer la evolución de los hemoparásitos en los océanos”.
Fernando Ruíz Escobar está en camino de convertirse en Doctor en Ciencias en Oceanografía Costera por la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.
